Made to Measure vs. Custom Suits

Over the years big brand designers and department stores have helped fuel the confusion between a made to measure suit and a custom suit. While there are definite strengths to a good made to measure suit program, there are major differences between the two.
What exactly is a made to measure suit?

Made to measure suits are customizable suits made from pre-existing patterns modified to your size and  with your choice of fabric and details. As far as fit goes, a made to measure suit is one that is made for you based off of the standard off the peg size. Most people will need some form of adjustments or alteration when it comes to ready made suits. On a made to measure suit the fabric will be cut to reflect these adjustments already. Since the suit will not be made until you order it, this gives the customer the chance to select fabric and details not carried by the designers current collection.

This is a great option if you already can fit into a particular designer’s ready made version with minimal alterations. For instance if you are a fan of Hugo Boss suits, a made to measure version will allow you to choose a fabric that isn’t carried in the stores and add personal details, all while leaving the soul of Hugo Boss’s slim and modern lines intact. If you do not fit into the designers ready made suits, then it will be best to avoid their made to measure program.

Custom suits start from scratch. The design and cut based on your own measurements. While with made to measure, some cuts will better fit certain body types (I.E. Muscular men should avoid slim cut modern suits or Slim men should avoid full cut American suits) , going custom will allow you to take different design elements, from all the different types of suit cuts, that work with your body and combine them for a functional, comfortable and beautiful suit.
