There is a big misconception in the market place today as to what constitutes a custom suit. Terms such as custom tailor, master tailor, bespoke suit, made to measure, handmade suits etc. are thrown around loosely and often times interchanged. This dilutes their meaning and often times, confuses the consumer. In England and France terms such as “bespoke” and others are protected by law, as it implies tradition and quality as only a true master tailor can deliver.
Here in the US, many custom suit makers and clothiers use the term to describe their offerings, yet, they use sales people to measure you, and then build “custom suits”, while cut from patterns made from scratch, that are truly not custom (try requesting a custom suit cut in a specific design
movement and all you will get is a blank look). At best, they work a gray area, as the terms associated around custom suits are open to interpretation for most Americans. We see it differently, this is an outright lie.
A true custom suit carries 3 traits that define it:
Fit-The ability to make a garment to your exact measurement,
Cut- the ability to create any suit, form any one set of client measurements with any detail that can be sketched
Craftsmanship-A garment built using traditional custom tailoring techniques.
