When an off the rack “high fashion” designer creates his clothes he starts from a very specific set of measurements. For men and women they usually start from a “nine heads” model (the bodies proportion is equivalent to nine heads). This translates to a 6’ 155lb 38” chest, 29” waist for males or a 5’9” 115lb. 34” chest, 24” waist , 32” hips for women.
The clothing is then “graded”, proportioned, to all the other sizes. The clothing can be stunning and often times beautiful. The problem is that the proportions of the sizes do not mirror the general population and the styles can often be impractical for every day wear.

On the other hand most off the rack brands cut their clothes for the masses. They try to maximize their potential customer base, so their sizes are much more “safe” i.e. The size 42r is made to fit an overweight person with a 42” chest, an extremely athletic person with a 42” chest and, of course, an average build with a 42” chest. The end result is a piece of clothing that just doesn’t fit any body quite right.
